Meet Onyx

Onyx is a scientist and a honeybee conservationist based in Portland, OR.

She has a MS in Wildlife Disease, and has traveled abroad to study with some of the world’s experts in honeybee conservation and bee shamanism. Through the merging of these scientific and spiritual realms, Onyx has begun a new and radical kind of beekeeping, one that has the honeybee’s highest interest at heart. She has spoken globally at conferences on these topics, and has been educating both children + adults in the Portland area about honeybees for the past 7 years.

Onyx also has an interest in Apitherapy, an understanding of the honeybees as medicinal wisdom keepers. She continues to explore ethical & sustainable ways of sharing honeybee medicine with her community, and is available to ALL individuals interested in studying magic ways of being with bees.

When we learn to cultivate a relationship with our bee colonies, we begin to understand they also bring a kind of spiritual nourishment forth in our lives that runs much deeper than the miracles of honey or pollination. We also begin to learn that being a bee tender means doing what is best for the bees, to be bee-centric in our management practices. This is the best way to support bees (and all pollinators).

Testimonials

  • Onyx has been such a helpful hand + resource in tending my first hive. She helped me gather a swarm of bees that had made a home in a trash can + after gathering them, had swarmed again in a tree. It was a very eventful experience + she was supportive the whole way! She's offered a whole lot of advice along the way to help me tend them and allow them to flourish ~ everything from what to do during fire + smoke season to how to move my bees to my new home. I'm super grateful for her guidance + happy to report that my bees are well thus far!

  • I have had the pleasure of working alongside Onyx as a single honeybee collected nectar between us, and other times with 20,000 honeybees in the air around us. She was ecstatic in both situations. I know how she felt. She has a vision of bringing change to our relationship with bees and I find that totally delightful.

  • Learning about the magical bees with Onyx was so inspiring + informative. The children loved sharing their newly learned bee knowledge with everyone they met. Onyx is fantastic with children + we left passionate about helping to save these amazing creatures + spreading the wisdom we learned. I can't recommend Onyx enough as an advocate, teacher, + amazing human.

Swarm Rescue Program

Swarms are by far the best way to obtain bees as they tend to be stronger and healthier colonies. Wild mated queens ensure a variety of the strongest local genetic stock. Onyx is experienced in collecting feral honeybee swarms, and has the potential to supply them to pre-approved homes.
