Swarm Rescue Program

One of the biggest issues in honeybee conservation today is that we have selectively bred and weakened the genetics of our colonies over the past 150 years. We have bred bees with the convenience of the beekeeper in mind (selecting for traits like docile behavior, high honey yield, low propolis production, etc) and not for their survival.

The only way to save the honeybees now is to REWILD them. To give them homes that mimic natural conditions, and allow them to evolve stronger genetics through wild mating and natural selection.

Obtaining swarms rather than nucs or packages is an important step in rewilding and strengthening the honeybee.

How do I get approved for a swarm?

Since swarms are so genetically valuable, it is important to ensure they are going to homes that will support their ability to thrive.

A 30 minute pre-scheduled consultation ($50 fee) is required to ensure the habitat you have is suitable for pollinators. If any adjustments need to be made, Onyx will communicate those during the consultation.

Once potential concerns are addressed your information will be added to the swarm list. When you are approved for a swarm, the consultation fee will act as a deposit towards your bees!

Preference for swarms will first be given to school programs + those registered for one-on-one mentorship
